What is LASIK?
LASIK is commonly used to correct:
Myopia (short-sightedness, minus power)
Hyperopia (long-sightedness, plus power)
Astigmatism (cylindrical power)
In simple terms, the treatment changes the shape of the cornea so that you may depend less on glasses.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a laser procedure that reshapes the cornea, the clear front window of the eye, so that light focuses properly on the retina. It is used to reduce or remove the need for glasses and contact lenses in people with:
Why Contoura Vision is superior to SMILE and SILK
Contoura Vision is a topography-guided form of LASIK. Standard LASIK corrects your spectacle number (spherical and cylindrical power). Contoura uses a detailed corneal topography map, capturing thousands of points across the surface of your cornea, and plans treatment customised to that individual map. This can also address small irregularities on the corneal surface (higher-order aberrations) that glasses cannot correct.

Mapped to your own cornea. Contoura measures up to 22,000 points on your cornea and plans the laser treatment from that individual map, not just from your spectacle number.
Corrects small irregularities too. It can treat minor corneal surface irregularities that SMILE and SILK are not designed to target, which can mean crisper, sharper vision, especially at night.
A personalised correction. For many eyes, this gives a more tailored result than a power-only treatment.

Usually considered for: People aged 18 or over with stable power and healthy corneas.

Contoura Vision
How it works: Laser treatment planned from your own corneal topography map.
Usually considered for: People aged 18 or over with stable power, where the corneal map supports this option.
Decided by: Your corneal-mapping assessment.
PRK (surface laser)
How it works: Laser reshapes the surface of the cornea; no flap is made.
Usually considered for: Suitable eyes where a flap is not advisable, such as thinner corneas.

ICL (implantable lens)
How it works: A thin lens is placed inside the eye; the cornea is not reshaped.
Usually considered for: High eye power, or thin corneas where laser may not be suitable.
Decided by: Your eye assessment and measurements.
About PRK: because the surface layer of the cornea has to heal, recovery is slower than LASIK. Vision settles over days to weeks, and the eyes can be uncomfortable for the first few days.

Are you a suitable candidate?
You may be suitable for LASIK or Contoura Vision if you:
Are 18 years or older
Have had stable eye power for at least one year
Have healthy corneas of adequate thickness
Do not have keratoconus or another progressive corneal condition
Do not have an active eye infection or severe, uncontrolled dry eye
Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
Do not have uncontrolled conditions such as diabetes or autoimmune disease
Keratoconus? If your corneal map shows keratoconus, laser vision correction is usually not advisable. Instead, we offer keratoconus treatment with C3R (corneal collagen cross-linking), which aims to strengthen the cornea and slow or stop keratoconus from progressing. C3R does not remove your glasses; its goal is to protect your cornea.

Your corneal-mapping assessment
Before any laser treatment, we check whether your eyes are suitable and which option fits them.
Corneal mapping with a Pentacam scan: a detailed map of your cornea. The scan itself usually takes under 5 minutes.
A dilated eye examination: your pupils are widened with eye drops so Dr Mittal can examine your eyes fully.
Plan for about 1 hour: the full pre-operative assessment takes roughly one hour.
Please do not drive yourself home. Because your pupils are dilated, your vision stays blurred and sensitive to light for a while afterwards. Come with someone, or arrange a ride.
If you wear contact lenses: lenses can temporarily change the shape of the cornea and affect the corneal map. Before the assessment, occasional users should stop 1 day ahead, while daily wearers who use lenses for 8 hours or more a day should stop 3 days ahead. Everyone should stop wearing contact lenses 5 days before surgery.
How LASIK and Contoura Vision are done
Your eyes are numbed with drops. You stay awake and comfortable.
2. A thin protective flap is created on the surface of the cornea.
3. The laser reshapes the cornea according to your treatment plan. For Contoura, the plan is built from your corneal topography map.
4. The flap is placed back. It heals without stitches.
The procedure usually takes about 10–15 minutes for both eyes. Most people feel pressure or mild discomfort rather than significant pain.

Recovery after LASIK
Day 1: eyes may water, feel gritty or look hazy for a few hours. Rest and use the prescribed drops.
Next day: many people notice a clear improvement in vision; you will have a check-up.
First weeks: use drops as advised; do not rub your eyes; avoid swimming, eye make-up and dusty places for the period Dr Mittal advises.
Screen work and office: many people return within a few days, depending on comfort and the doctor's advice.
Risks and honest expectations
LASIK and Contoura Vision are well-established procedures, but no surgery is without risk. Possible effects include temporary dry eyes, glare or halos around lights at night (often improving over time), and under- or over-correction that may need glasses or a later enhancement. Serious complications are uncommon. Dr Mittal will discuss the risks for your specific eyes.
Many suitable patients reduce or stop using glasses. Results vary from person to person, and we cannot promise a specific outcome; we will tell you what is realistic for your eyes at the assessment.
How long do the results last? The correction can remain stable for many years. However, the eye still ages: after about 40, most people gradually need reading glasses (presbyopia), whether or not they have had LASIK.
About your surgeon: Dr Manik Mittal
Dr Manik Mittal is the founder of New Vision Eye Centre in Paschim Vihar. He completed his MBBS and MD in Ophthalmology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and has 16 years' experience in ophthalmology. He performs LASIK, Contoura Vision, ICL and cataract surgery, and is registered with the Delhi Medical Council (Reg. No. 06043).
Over his career he has personally performed more than 20,000 cataract surgeries, including operations from before he founded New Vision Eye Centre. The centre has treated more than 75,000 patients.

What is the difference between LASIK and Contoura Vision?
Both reshape the cornea with a laser. Standard LASIK corrects your spectacle power. Contoura Vision plans the treatment from a detailed topography map of your own cornea, so it can also address small surface irregularities. Which is right for you depends on your corneal map and eye health.
Am I eligible for LASIK?
Generally you need to be 18 or older, with stable power for at least a year, healthy corneas of adequate thickness and no active eye disease. Only a full eye examination with corneal mapping can confirm it. Book a consultation for a corneal-mapping assessment to find out.
What happens at the corneal-mapping assessment, and how long does it take?
Your cornea is mapped with a Pentacam scan, which usually takes under 5 minutes, and your pupils are dilated with eye drops for a full eye examination. Plan for about 1 hour in total, and do not drive yourself home afterwards.
How long should I stop wearing contact lenses before the assessment and surgery?

What does LASIK feel like?
Your eyes are numbed with drops, so most people feel pressure or mild discomfort during the procedure. For a few hours afterwards, the eyes may water, sting or feel gritty.
How long does it take, and when can I go back to work?
The procedure takes about 10–15 minutes for both eyes. Many people return to office or screen work within a few days, depending on comfort and Dr Mittal's advice.
How long do LASIK results last?
The correction can remain stable for many years. The eye still ages, so most people need reading glasses after about 40 (presbyopia), with or without LASIK.
What if I am not suitable for LASIK?
There are other options. If your cornea is on the thinner side, PRK (surface laser) may suit. If your power is very high or your cornea is too thin for laser, ICL (an implantable lens) may be an option. If the corneal map shows keratoconus, C3R cross-linking is used to strengthen the cornea instead of laser. Dr Mittal will explain the alternatives after your tests.
How much does LASIK cost in Delhi?

Does health insurance cover LASIK?
Usually not when it is done only to remove glasses: IRDAI's standard exclusions cover refractive error below 7.5 dioptres. Higher powers or medical reasons may be considered under some policies. We offer cashless treatment with all major health insurance companies and TPAs, including public-sector insurers via the GIPSA PPN network, and our team can check your policy for you.

Is Contoura Vision better than SMILE or SILK?
We believe Contoura Vision is the superior technology, which is why we chose it for our laser suite. It plans the treatment from a detailed map of your own cornea, so it can correct small surface irregularities as well as your power. SMILE and SILK correct power through a small incision but are not designed to treat these irregularities. We do not perform SMILE or SILK. Your corneal-mapping assessment shows whether Contoura Vision, LASIK, PRK or ICL suits your eyes.
Chashma hatane ka operation safe hai kya?
LASIK aur Contoura Vision duniya bhar mein kaafi saalon se kiye ja rahe hain aur suitable aankhon mein inke results achhe rehte hain. Lekin har surgery ki tarah kuch risk hote hain, jaise kuch samay ke liye aankhon mein sukhapan ya raat mein roshni ke aas-paas halo dikhna.
