Retina and diabetic eye care in Paschim Vihar, Delhi
The retina is the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye. Many retinal diseases, especially diabetic retinopathy, cause no pain and no early symptoms, so damage can build up before vision drops. Regular checks find problems while they can still be treated. Retina care at New Vision Eye Centre is led by Dr Manik Mittal, MBBS and MD Ophthalmology (AIIMS), who completed 12 months of retina training at AIIMS and independently ran the medical retina clinic at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, New Delhi.
When to get urgent help
Go to an eye doctor the same day if you notice:
A sudden shower of new floaters or flashes of light
A shadow or curtain coming across part of your vision
Sudden blurring, or straight lines looking wavy or bent
These can be signs of a retinal tear, detachment or bleeding. Call us first on 81309 30330; if you cannot reach us, go to the nearest eye emergency.
Who should have regular retina checks
Everyone with diabetes, at least once a year, even with good sugar control and clear vision
People with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or kidney disease
People aged over 50 (for age-related macular degeneration)
People with high short-sightedness (high minus power), who are more prone to retinal thinning and tears
Anyone with a family history of retinal disease
What we diagnose and treat
Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema: screening, monitoring and treatment. Dr Mittal presented a new OCT-based classification of diabetic macular edema at AIOS 2015.
Retinal laser: pan-retinal photocoagulation (PRP) for advanced diabetic retinopathy, and macular grid laser.
Lattice degeneration and retinal holes: barrier laser to lower the risk of detachment.
Injections into the eye (anti-VEGF) for diabetic macular edema, wet macular degeneration and vein blockages.
Retinal vein and artery blockages, and retinal changes from high blood pressure.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
OCT scans and retinal photographs (fundus camera) to map and monitor the retina.
Where specialised surgery such as vitrectomy is needed, we will explain this clearly and guide you to the right surgeon.
What happens at a retina check-up
Eye drops widen (dilate) the pupils so the whole retina can be examined. Depending on findings, an OCT scan or photographs may be taken. Dilation blurs vision and makes light uncomfortable for 4 to 6 hours, so please do not drive yourself home and bring someone along. Bring your sugar reports (HbA1c), blood pressure readings and a list of medicines.
Frequently asked questions
My vision is fine. Do I still need a retina check for diabetes?
Yes. Diabetic retinopathy usually causes no symptoms until it is advanced. A yearly dilated eye examination is recommended for everyone with diabetes.
Is retinal laser painful?
Laser is done after numbing drops. Most people feel brief flashes or mild discomfort. Your doctor will explain what to expect for your treatment.
How many injections will I need?
This depends on the condition and how the eye responds. Injections are usually given as a course, with OCT scans to decide how many are needed.
Is retina treatment covered under CGHS or insurance?
Many retina treatments are covered under CGHS, ECHS and health insurance, subject to approval. Call the insurance team on 96251 54575 to check your cover.
