Children's eye care and squint treatment in Paschim Vihar, Delhi
Children rarely complain about their eyesight. They assume everyone sees the way they do. Many eye problems in children, including weak sight in one eye and squint, are easiest to treat when found early. At New Vision Eye Centre, children are examined by Dr Manik Mittal, MBBS and MD Ophthalmology (AIIMS), who trained in squint and children's eye problems at AIIMS and screened more than 1,000 newborn babies for retinopathy of prematurity at DDU Hospital, New Delhi.
Signs your child should have an eye check-up
Sitting very close to the TV or holding a phone or book close to the face
Squinting, tilting the head, or closing one eye to see
One eye turning in, out, up or down, all the time or when tired
Frequent eye rubbing, watering, or headaches after school or screen use
Difficulty reading the board, or a falling interest in reading
A white reflection in the pupil in photos (see a doctor promptly)
A family history of squint, lazy eye or high glasses power
Every child should have a full eye examination before starting school, even with no symptoms.
What we check and treat
Glasses power (short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism): checked with eye drops where needed, as children's eyes can hide their true power.
Lazy eye (amblyopia): weak vision in one eye, treated with glasses and patching. Treatment works well when started young.
Squint (strabismus): eyes that do not point the same way. Treated with glasses, exercises or surgery depending on the type.
Increasing glasses power (myopia control): low-dose atropine eye drops and special myopia-control spectacle lenses to slow the rise in power, along with advice on outdoor time and screen habits.
Eye infections, allergies and watering eyes, including blocked tear ducts in babies.
About squint
A squint is when the eyes do not look in the same direction. It is not something a child "grows out of", and it is not only a cosmetic problem: the brain can start ignoring the turned eye, causing lazy eye. Squint can also appear in adults, after injury, or with diabetes and nerve problems.
Treatment depends on the cause. Some squints are fully corrected with glasses; others need patching, exercises, or surgery on the eye muscles. Dr Mittal trained in squint at AIIMS and performs squint surgery at the centre.
Your child's visit
Plan about an hour. The check includes vision testing suited to the child's age, an eye-alignment check, a glasses-power test (often with dilating drops, which blur near vision for a few hours), and an examination of the inside of the eye. Bring any earlier glasses and prescriptions. Dilated pupils make bright light uncomfortable, so a cap or sunglasses helps on the way home.
Frequently asked questions
At what age should a child have the first eye check-up?
A full eye examination before starting school is advisable, and earlier if you notice any of the signs above or there is a family history of eye problems.
Can glasses power in children be reduced?
Glasses correct the power; they do not cause it to increase. Some children's power rises as they grow. Regular checks, outdoor play and limited close-up screen time help, and for children whose power is rising quickly, low-dose atropine drops or myopia-control lenses can slow the increase.
Will my child need surgery for squint?
Not always. Many squints improve with glasses or patching. Surgery is advised only when other measures are not enough.
Is cashless treatment available for children?
Yes, for eligible insurance policies and government panels such as CGHS and ECHS, subject to approval. Call the insurance team on 96251 54575.
