Glaucoma (kala motia) treatment in Paschim Vihar, Delhi
Glaucoma, often called kala motia, is a group of conditions in which the optic nerve is slowly damaged, commonly with raised pressure inside the eye. Vision lost to glaucoma cannot be recovered, which is why early detection and regular follow-up matter. New Vision Eye Centre in Paschim Vihar evaluates and treats glaucoma under Dr Manik Mittal. Glaucoma is different from cataract (motiyabind), even though the names sound alike.
Why glaucoma is easy to miss
The most common type develops without pain or noticeable symptoms. Side vision shrinks first, so people often notice only when the damage is advanced. Less often, angle-closure glaucoma comes suddenly with eye pain, redness, headache, nausea and blurred vision, and needs urgent care.
Who should get checked
Anyone above 40 years, at regular intervals
People with a family history of glaucoma
People with diabetes, high short-sightedness or past eye injury
Anyone who has used steroid drops or tablets for a long time
Tests used
Eye pressure measurement (tonometry)
Examination of the optic nerve
Visual field test, for side vision
OCT scan of the nerve layers
Gonioscopy, to look at the drainage angle
Tests may be repeated on later visits because glaucoma is judged over time.
Treatment options
Treatment aims to slow further damage by lowering eye pressure. Options include prescription eye drops, laser treatment and surgery. The choice depends on the type and stage of glaucoma. Eye drops need to be used regularly as prescribed, even when vision seems fine. Please do not rely on home remedies or unprescribed medicines.
Living with glaucoma
Regular check-ups, correct use of drops and reporting new symptoms promptly are central. Family members may be advised to be examined too.
