An anti-VEGF injection is a medicine placed inside the eye to calm leaking or abnormal blood vessels in the retina. It is one of the main treatments for swelling at the centre of the retina (the macula), and it helps protect and, in many eyes, improve vision.

Which conditions are treated with anti-VEGF?

  • Wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD)

  • Diabetic macular edema (swelling of the macula due to diabetes)

  • Retinal vein occlusion (a blocked vein in the retina) with macular swelling

  • Some other conditions with abnormal vessels, as assessed by your doctor

Medicines we use

Anti-VEGF medicines used at New Vision Eye Centre include Razumab, Eylea, Pagenax and Vabysmo. The choice depends on your condition, your scans and your cover, and your doctor will explain the options.

What happens on the day

  1. Consultation and OCT scan. An OCT scan (Huvitz OCT, in-house) maps the layers of the retina and shows the swelling.

  2. Same-day injection where suitable. If the injection is advised and you are ready, it can be given the same day after consultation, subject to approval of your cover.

  3. Numbing and cleaning. The eye is numbed with anaesthetic drops and cleaned with antiseptic. A small clip keeps the eyelids open.

  4. The injection. It takes a few seconds. Most people feel pressure rather than pain.

  5. Going home. You go home the same day. The eye may feel gritty or show a small red spot for a few days, which settles on its own. Please bring someone along.

Why more than one injection?

Anti-VEGF medicines work for a limited time, so treatment is usually given as a course: commonly a few monthly doses first, then the gap is set by how your retina responds on OCT. Regular follow-up is a key part of treatment. Stopping early can let the swelling return.

Is it safe?

Eye injections are a routine, well-established treatment. As with any procedure, there is a small chance of problems such as infection or raised eye pressure, which is why the injection is given under sterile conditions and you are told what to watch for afterwards. Call us promptly if you notice increasing pain, redness or a drop in vision after an injection.

Cashless options

Anti-VEGF injections are available cashless under CGHS, ECHS, DGEHS and health insurance, subject to approval. Our team helps with the paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

Will the injection hurt?

The eye is numbed with drops first. Most people feel brief pressure and say it was easier than they expected.

How many injections will I need?

It depends on your condition and how your eye responds. OCT scans at each visit guide the plan.

Can I get the injection the same day?

Yes, when it is advised and your cover is in place, it can be given the same day after your consultation.

Which medicine is right for me?

Your doctor will explain the options (Razumab, Eylea, Pagenax or Vabysmo) for your condition and cover.
