The macula is the small central part of the retina that lets you read, recognise faces and see fine detail. In age-related macular degeneration (AMD, also written ARMD), the macula wears down with age. Side vision is usually kept, but central vision can become blurred or distorted.

Dry and wet AMD

  • Dry AMD is the more common form. Deposits (drusen) and thinning build up slowly. It is monitored with regular checks and OCT scans, and your doctor may advise eye vitamins (AREDS-type supplements) for certain stages.

  • Wet AMD happens when abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula and leak. It can change vision faster, so early treatment with anti-VEGF injections matters.

Warning signs

  • Straight lines (door frames, tiles) look wavy or bent

  • A blurred or dark patch in the centre of vision

  • Difficulty reading or recognising faces

Sudden distortion or a new dark patch needs an eye check within a day or two.

How we diagnose

A dilated retina examination and an OCT scan (Huvitz OCT, in-house) show the layers of the macula and any fluid. Retinal photographs may also be taken to track changes.

Treatment

  • Wet AMD: anti-VEGF injections into the eye. Anti-VEGF medicines used at New Vision Eye Centre include Razumab, Eylea, Pagenax and Vabysmo. The choice depends on your condition, your scans and your cover, and your doctor will explain the options. Injections are given as a course, with OCT-guided follow-up visits to decide timing. Same-day injection after consultation is possible where suitable.

  • Dry AMD: regular monitoring, an Amsler grid for home checks, advice on stopping smoking, a diet rich in green leafy vegetables, and supplements where advised.

Living with AMD

Ongoing follow-up is the most important step. Many people with wet AMD keep useful reading vision with regular treatment. We also advise on lighting and magnifiers when needed.

Cashless options

Anti-VEGF injections are cashless under CGHS, ECHS, DGEHS and health insurance, subject to approval.

Frequently asked questions

Can AMD be cured?

AMD cannot be reversed completely, but wet AMD can be controlled with treatment, and early treatment helps protect vision.

Will I go blind from AMD?

AMD affects central vision. Side vision usually remains, so people do not lose all sight from AMD alone.

How often do I need checks?

Dry AMD: as advised, often every 6–12 months, or sooner if the Amsler grid changes. Wet AMD: usually monthly at first.
