Retinal vein occlusion (RVO)
RVO happens when a vein carrying blood out of the retina gets blocked. Blood and fluid leak into the retina, and vision can blur suddenly, often in one eye and without pain. It is linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, glaucoma and smoking.
Branch RVO (BRVO): part of the vision is affected.
Central RVO (CRVO): the whole retina is affected.
Treatment: an OCT scan (Huvitz OCT, in-house) checks for macular swelling. Swelling is treated with anti-VEGF injections. Anti-VEGF medicines used at New Vision Eye Centre include Razumab, Eylea, Pagenax and Vabysmo. The choice depends on your condition, your scans and your cover, and your doctor will explain the options. In-house retina laser treatment may be used for some eyes. We also ask you to get your BP, sugar and cholesterol checked with your physician.
Central serous retinopathy (CSR)
In CSR, fluid collects under the centre of the retina, causing blurred, dim or distorted central vision. It is seen more in people aged 25–50, and is linked to stress and steroid medicines (including creams, inhalers and tablets).
Treatment: many CSR episodes settle on their own over a few weeks to months, so OCT monitoring is the first step. We review any steroid use with you. If the fluid persists or comes back, other treatment is discussed.

Frequently asked questions
Will my vision come back after RVO?
Treatment aims to reduce swelling and protect vision. The amount of recovery differs from eye to eye, and early treatment helps.
Should I stop my steroid medicine for CSR?
Do not stop any medicine on your own. Your eye doctor and the prescribing doctor will decide together.
