ICL eye surgery in Paschim Vihar, Delhi

An Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) is a thin lens placed inside the eye, in front of the natural lens, to correct short-sightedness and, in some cases, astigmatism. Unlike laser vision correction, it does not remove corneal tissue. New Vision Eye Centre in Paschim Vihar assesses patients for ICL under Dr Manik Mittal.

When is ICL considered?

ICL is usually discussed when laser surgery may not be suitable, for example with a high glasses power, a thin cornea or a dry eye problem. It can be considered for adults roughly between 21 and 45 years whose power is stable. The decision depends entirely on your examination.

Tests before ICL

  • Detailed refraction and corneal mapping

  • Measurement of the space inside the front of the eye, which decides the lens size

  • Endothelial cell count

  • Eye pressure and a dilated retina examination

These measurements are used to order a lens made to your eye. There may be a wait of some days for it.

How the procedure is done

With numbing drops and a small opening, the folded lens is placed inside the eye and unfolds in position. Each eye is done separately, usually a day or more apart, and most people go home the same day. Drops are prescribed for a few weeks. Your surgeon explains how long to rest and when to resume work.

Risks to know

ICL is an intraocular procedure. Possible risks include infection, a rise in eye pressure, cataract formation, lens position problems and the need for lens repositioning or removal. Regular follow-up visits are needed, including yearly check-ups. These points are explained before you decide.

Who may not be suitable

Reasons can include a shallow front chamber, low endothelial cell count, active eye disease, unstable power, or pregnancy. In such cases other options, including LASIK, PRK or glasses, may be advised.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is ICL the same as LASIK?

A: No. LASIK reshapes the cornea with a laser. ICL places a lens inside the eye. Which one fits depends on your eye.

Q: Can the lens be removed?

A: It can be taken out or replaced by a surgeon if required.

Q: Will I need glasses after ICL?

A: Some people do for certain tasks. Reading glasses are usually needed after the age of about 40.

Q: What does ICL cost?

A: Charges depend on the lens power and type. Please call the Surgery Counsellor on 89296 30330 after your examination.

Q: Does insurance cover it?

A: Many policies exclude vision correction. Our insurance team, 96251 54575, can check.
