Deciding together
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. It develops slowly, and surgery is decided by how much it affects daily life, not by age alone. Other conditions, such as glaucoma, diabetes or retina problems, can cause similar symptoms, so an examination comes first. Families often find it easier if the patient is accompanied to the visit and the findings are explained to everyone at once.
Documents and items to carry
Earlier glasses and prescriptions
Medicine list and recent reports for sugar or blood pressure
Photo ID
Insurance, CGHS or ECHS papers if you plan to use them
On the day and at home
Surgery is a day-care procedure for most people. Someone should accompany the patient. Eye drops are prescribed for a few weeks, and follow-up visits are scheduled by the surgeon. At home, the family can help by keeping the drops on time, protecting the eye from dust and rubbing, and noting any pain or sudden drop in vision to report at once.
The second eye
If both eyes have cataracts, they are usually operated at different times. The surgeon advises on the gap after the first eye has healed.
Charges and cashless support
Cataract surgery starts from ₹12,000 per eye. The final charge depends on the lens and the examination. Cashless support is available for eligible insurance policies, CGHS and ECHS, subject to approval. The Insurance and cashless team can be reached on 96251 54575.
