Squinting, also known as strabismus, is a misalignment of the two eyes in which they do not look in the same direction. That instance, one eye may not focus on an object that is being examined. When the patient is staring straight ahead, the second eye may turn in, out, upwards, or downwards. This mismatch may be permanent or intermittent. Squinting is more frequent in children, but it can occur in adults as well. Most squints in young children are caused by poor vision. Adult squints are frequently caused by secondary factors such as trauma, brain lesions, looking at a computer screen for long periods of time, and so on, and their treatment differs from that of children. We don't know what causes squinting, but an imbalance of the eye muscles can be caused by either diminished vision in one eye or a nerve supply anomaly. If the squint is caused by weak vision, or amblyopia, the vision must be repaired with amblyopia therapy.
