A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of your eye (the clear part of the eye that helps to focus light). Cataracts are very common as you get older. In fact, more than half of all Americans age 80 or older either have cataracts or have had surgery to get rid of cataracts. When cataracts impair vision, it may be more challenging to read, drive (particularly at night), or read a friend's facial expression. The majority of cataracts progress gradually and initially do not impair vision. On the other side, cataracts will eventually cause vision impairment. Initially, better lighting and eye protection can help you manage cataracts. Cataract surgery can be necessary if your poor vision is limiting your normal activities. Fortunately, cataract surgery is typically a safe and successful course of treatment. Make an appointment for an eye checkup if you observe any changes in your eyesight.
