LASIK eye surgery is the most well-known and widely used laser refractive treatment to treat vision problems. For contact lenses or spectacles, LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is an alternative. During LASIK surgery, the cornea—the transparent, dome-shaped tissue at the front of the eye—is precisely reshaped using a specialized cutting laser to improve vision. In eyes with normal vision, the cornea precisely bends (refracts) light onto the retina at the back of the eye. However, astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness cause the light to be bent incorrectly, which results in blurred vision. The necessary refraction can also be obtained by reshaping the cornea, even though vision correction with glasses or contact lenses is an alternative.
