Images that, due to a short eye or flat cornea, are focused outside of the retina will be brought close to or directly onto the retina after surgery. For the purpose of treating astigmatism, methods of refractive surgery can be used to selectively reshape areas of an asymmetrical cornea to make them smooth and symmetrical. As a result, instead of being distorted by light scattering through an asymmetrical cornea, images are sharply focused on the retina.
