Vitrectomy surgery is used to treat a number of diseases affecting the retina, vitreous, and macula in the back of the eye. This technique requires the removal of the vitreous, which is a liquid gel located at the back of the eye. The lack of vitreous gel has no effect on the function of the eye. Instrument insertion is done through three tiny incisions near the front of the eye. To light up the inside of the eye, a fiberoptic bulb is placed into the initial incision.
