What is blade free LASIK?

When no blade is used for the entire procedure of LASIK, it is called blade free LASIK.

What is the advantage of blade free LASIK?

There are two main parts of LASIK surgery:
1. Creation of corneal flap.
2. Laser below the flap on corneal stroma bed to rectify the refractive error.

For the first part either a blade (microtome) is used or specialized laser called femtosecond laser is used. With the laser, the cut is more precise and under direct visualization, unlike with a blade, and hence more safe.

What about the cost of blade free LASIK?

Since two different laser machines are used for blade free LASIK, the cost is more than with blade LASIK. However, considering the advantages, blade free LASIK is a better choice.

What is custom-vue LASIK or wavefront guided LASIK?
LASIK which is customized according to the patient's own optical (eye) aberrations is called custom-vue LASIK or wavefront guided LASIK.

What are optical aberration?

Optical aberration are the natural defects in the refractive state/mechanism of the eye due to which the patient cannot focus and see objects clearly. There are different types of optical aberrations. Lower order aberrations are rectified in a normal LASIK but for significant higher order aberrations, wavefront guided LASIK is required.

What is done in custom-vue LASIK or wavefront guided LASIK?

Firstly, the patient's eyes are scanned to find out its optical aberrations. Then, this data is fed into the LASIK machine, where the computer generates the laser for rectifying these errors, according to the individual optical aberrations, during LASIK surgery.

Do all cases require custom-vue LASIK or wavefront-guided LASIK?

This depends upon the type of optical aberrations present in one's eye. For lower order aberrations normal LASIK surgery is mostly sufficient but for significant higher-order aberrations, customized LASIK is more useful. Your eye surgeon can let you know more about this on seeing your optical aberrations scan.
